“The weather Gods are terribly angry with us this time”, says one old neighbour in my locality.

“El Nino effect is looming large on our heads,” claim the weather department.

“A drought-like situation may arise if the rains don’t come pretty soon”, is the breaking news in the T.V channels these days.

Hearing all this makes me plead to God, “Rabba, Rabba, Meeh Barsa…………….”. The worst affected are the poor farmers, the very people whose existence feeds the whole country. Watching the dried patches of land, which were, once upon a time, beautiful rivers, or ponds is so disturbing. The heat wave, especially, in the north of India, has made life hell for the rich and the poor equally.

It seems the Gods are not going to be appeased so easily this time. We have done so much of damage to the environment for our own selfish reasons that no hints or warnings from mother nature could be sensed by our greedy and dead minds and souls. Like errant and naughty kids, we ignored and remained blinded to what all the environmentalists kept screaming about. Global warming has become a cliched term by now. Carbon footprint is the in-thing and the most happening word. But how much have we done to actually show that we care and understand all this talk about the earth heating up?

The other day I read in the newspaper how two Dutch students, who were on a visit to India, liked our Rickshaw so much that they decided to take it to their country to be used as an eco-friendly mode of transport to their university. Such inspiring news. I wish the Indian student community learns something from this.

As they say, “Actions speak louder than words,” I think it would be better if there is less banter and more work in cleaning up the environment in the real sense of the term, so that we don’t have to suffer for want of the monsoons next year.

Remember the old saying, “God helps those who help themselves.”

  • You have rightly described; we are going away from the natural balance. This year, we had low rains…it’s really a matter of concern. We all should think about it.
