Breaking the Glass ceiling in Indian IT companies – Reality ?
Email This Post
While corporate India Inc is increasing looking at having diversity in their workforce by placing women employees at key decision making positions, what seems to be the scene in IT industry ? Having worked long 25 years , in IT industry in India, I think progress may not be the same as it’s peer industries like banking and health, travel. While significantly high number of woman join the work force at the bottom of the rung, the difference in growth at work place is obvious right from early years. At first promotion itself good number of woman start lagging behind. While most of these companies talk a lot of need of diversity, benefits woman bring to the table, and international woman’s day is celebrated with lot fun and frolic, the changes that need to happen right from changing work styles, measurements at work to providing basic facilities of day-care do not exist at most of the companies. When you look at the models of leadership, and selection criteria that seldom includes woman dominated qualities. Also many times woman are taken for granted, assumption made on their behalf of having work a lesser priority. While no doubt it is true that young women in early stage of their life particularly given Indian context are bit confused about their priorities, I guess good mentor may go long way in changing that. I think it is certainly finding almost equal woman leaders in IT industry in my opinion is few decades away.

I quite agree with your views. The change needs to happen to both the corporate and social world and ofcourse more in the corporate env. Organizations need to dive deep into the root cause of why women do not make it to the top
