Sunday Chitchat
Email This Post
Ritualistic Sunday morning. Tugging at the warmth on the bed, eyes closed, smiling, mouth watering at the smells emanating from the kitchen. Reluctant trotting for morning business and snuggling up on the couch with the newspaper, served hot with morning tea. Price hike, terrorism and recession; sometimes the world can’t surprise you anymore. It is sad,the world running out of excitement.
A glance through the matrimonial section, however, can give enough of entertainment to start the day. ‘Handsome young MNC boy, in need of a postgraduate non-working fair traditional homely girl.’ Sometimes the demands of a prospective husband is too heavy to bear. The adjectives ‘fair, traditional and homely’ is rather the matrimonial mantra for the girls. I wondered why at all the girl has to be a postgraduate when it is explicitly stressed that she should be non-working too. Matrimony is full of contradictions.
“Fair, slim, educated rich girl seeks alliance from handsome educated boys. Liabilities not a problem”. Wonder how rich that girl is and how much of liabilities can she bear. Somehow the pinging words of this ad is fair, rich and handsome. Well that’s how one pulls attention. Sundays can be cynical too.
“Young man, once divorced due to no fault of his, seeks alliance from single beautiful girls. No conditions on education.” There were many such second trials, very hopeful and always stressing clearly on what they don’t want in their partners. I however, pictured a young man bearing all the brunt of his educated wife and then divorcing her after his many attempts to get along. That might be possible. Its after all life, anything can happen.
Matrimonial sections show you in few sentences what people are and what their priorities are.The interesting fact is, there is little difference between an ad from another and the demands are almost always the same. If it is for a boy, it would be handsome, educated and highly placed.
For a girl, fair, slim, educated(conditional),traditional are the much sought after adjectives. Wonder what would happen if matrimonial ads had copy writes!
I was having fun with others’ marital dreams and demands when ma showed me an ad. “Fair, beautiful educated girl, seeks alliance from equally qualified handsome man belonging to well to do family”.The ad, I realized in shock was for me. And mine looked worse. I wondered if someone would be laughing reading my ad. Sundays are to get snubbed also.
