The Power of One
One song can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the dream,
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
One handclasp lifts a soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room.
One candle wiped out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart know’s what’s true.
One life can make the difference,
You see. It’s up to YOU !!!
I read this poem from a book which changed so much of me. I could not read further. I closed the book and sat with my eyes closed. My mind wandered in search of that thing, which has been with me in my all endeavours, without I wouldn’t be what I am today.
“Come beta, see Mama is standing just a step away.” Yes, I took those few steps during my early childhood, sometimes with a fall. I learned to walk because I knew she was there to care for me. I used to crave a friend during my school days and I had none. I was a quiet boy, a back-bencher, always with a frown, a non performer. And, even in all those moments, my mom used to say, “You are the Best.” Though no one felt I was worth a chat, my mom used to listen for hours from a son with such low-esteem and made me feel important.
I remember Mulla Sir, who was my coach for athletics during my high school. He used to be strict that we used to comment, “WE are trained by the Hitler of our times.” He used to hit us with skipping ropes if we didn’t run fast enough. However , before every race, he would tell us, “Believe that you can win every race. You have put in what’s needed to win and now you deserve the best. When you give everything you have, life will return everything you deserve.” That hand of a coach has created in me a self-belief that would last a lifetime.
Today, that one thing that’s making all the difference to my life is that belief that I deserve the best – a thought deep-rooted in me my Mama and Mulla sir. As I opened my eyes, I realised that it is my turn to be that ONE to help self-belief in someONE and make a difference. I now have to be that Mama, that Mulla sir, in someone’s life- after all, you see, it’s up to ME !!!
