Do you break the fast every day?

When I recently asked this query to one of my friends, she went into a tizzy! She reacted pretty fumingly saying, “Do I look like the types who’d fast?”. “I’d rather eat a four square meal, enjoy my daily walks and that’s about it. Please don’t ask me to fast. That’s not my cuppa tea”!

And then it struck me as to how casually and superficially had she interpreted my simple question. There I was inquisitively asking her whether she breaks her fast every single day, and there she stood shunning me down in totality, letting me know that she wasn’t into fasts et al. When in fact, I was plainly inquiring her about something else…….

The following day, I happened to meet one of my old friends who is a lot into healthy eating; healthy living gyan. So I quizzed her whether she broke her fast every day. And can you believe what respond she elicited for me? She remarked “Oh!  I do not fast that often. It’s alright for the body to fast once in a while, but not that frequent. On the contrary, fasting daily could be hazardous to health”.Wow! What a trophy answer! That too coming in from an individual who does a loud propaganda about healthy living and healthy eating!. I challenged her by mentioning my opinion that it was rather important to break the fast everyday………

And then somehow, from somewhere it dawned upon her what exactly I meant. She read between the lines and coherently understood that I was referring to “Breakfast” and not “break the fast”. And how relieved I was, when my question got the right comprehension it deserved!

And now that I had opened one of her pet topics, there was no stopping for her! Rather willingly, she went on and on, providing me the minutest of details of how really it is important for people to eat their daily round of breakfast.

Come to think of it, how many of us really take a breakfast daily? The trend is fast changing, so are the breakfast menus across homes.

The age old breakfast of the idlis, the wadas, the pohas, the upmas, the cutlets, the kadak chai are all being replaced by Green Tea, mint tea, sugar free cookies, toast- low fat butter, strawberries with low fattening cream, orange juice, watermelon juice, and what not juice………..So no scope for those filling pohas here; or for that matter those wada pavs as well.

The very definition of a breakfast is fast changing. While the awareness is aplenty as to how much important it really is to grab that bite in the morning, still there are far too many people who do not indulge in the sumptuous breakfast regime, and instead skip it altogether and concentrate on a power packed lunch.

Then there are a few who have embraced a new definition in their lives—Brunch. Now what on earth is that supposed to be? Well, to put it simply, it is a combination of breakfast and lunch. I really have no clue regarding the eatables one can enjoy as a part of this brunch business. But prima facie, I believe that a brunch is much like a hybrid attempt at eating. It is like seeking the best of both the worlds—that of a breakfast and that of a lunch.

But then, a breakfast is a breakfast is a breakfast. And a four square meal is a four square meal. So why to unnecessary mix up menus and eatables? Breakfast has its own place, so does a lunch.

The bottom-line is that both are important. So all you health geeks, just a reminder—don’t skip that important meal of the day. And it most definitely isn’t the brunch that I’m referring to. It is the Breakfast.

So, do break that fast every day!!
