Lost in Abbreviations!
Email This Post
When Rohit graduated with flying colors in Commerce, his dadaji asked him “What next beta?” Rohit beamed with pride as he answered “CAT”. He meowed so loudly as if he’d already cleared ground!
To his friend Purvi too her granny nosily enquired “ ab aage bhi padhne kaa plan hain kya tumhara?”. Purvi hit back with a loud reply “haan nani, ab tak toh sirf graduate huee hoon main. I’m going to appear for my NAT and study more and more….”replied Purvi lost in thoughts of her own….
Mehul’s dadi asked him “doctor kyu nahi re banta tu?” to which Mehul protested, “ doctor nahi bana, toh kya kuch nahi banunga kya mein…”. His dadi fell silent when he replied “Mein apne CET kee tayyari kar raha hoon. Dekhna, first aake dikhaunga mein….”.
Arohi totally intrigued her nanaji when she told him that she was preparing for some CFA, ICWA or something like that type of examination….He didn’t have the guts to ask Arohi it’s long form……He was completely lost in abbreviations! And so was each one of their grandparents with whom these youngistan kaa vow(!) had these conversations!
All four friends—no- not Aorhi, Mehul, Purvi and Rohit—but their respective dadas and dadis, nanas and nanis were Morning Walk friends, and they met up that Sunday morning for their routine round of walk. As Rohit’s dadaji opened the topic, he hastily made a passing mention that Rohit was planning to study for CAT. To which, Purvi’s dadi chipped in and stated that her grand daughter was appearing for NAT. The other twosome was slightly amused and thought that their friends were playing around some game of rhyming words—CAT, NAT!
Mehul’s dadi then made a passing reference that her grandson had plans to sit for CET. And lastly Arohi’s nanaji hurriedly mentioned that Arohi was interested to study for CFA…ICW….CA…..Saying so, he abruptly stopped!
Now, the big trouble was that each one of them just knew the abbreviations of the examinations that their respective grandchildren was planning to study for. If anybody were to question them about the kind of exam that it was, level of difficulty, coaching required, etc…etc, no one had any answers. All that they perfectly knew was that their grandchildren had entered in some huddle of CAT, NAT, from which there was no escape, if they have to prove themselves in this endless RAT race!
Quietly each returned to their own house that day with one big question mark haunting their minds. Tomorrow if some third person asks them “What does your grand child study”, they wouldn’t be in a position to reply. And so, seeking an answer to their haunting question was their immediate mission. To directly ask their grandchildren was something they didn’t want to do. After all, who wants to get cornered and be seen as an ill informed, indifferent person? Somehow none wanted to ask their sons/ daughters too….they didn’t want to become a laughing stock, or so they thought. Dictionary wasn’t going to help them either, in terms of understanding the long forms of these terminologies.
And so, one fine day, they all somehow hit upon a common idea! Each approached their respective grandchild under the pretext of casually asking them about world wide web, internet, how it works etc…etc. Once they got that bit of theoretical information they needed, their grandchildren introduced them to Google!—the great search engine!
And Voila! Within seven days, which is quite a laudable speed & progress for their age, all these senior citizens had not only the long forms of their grand children’s line of study by heart, but had also read at least a couple of web pages on each of their subjects! Now, that’s what I called “research”! Thanks to Google, their queries were solved and their anxiety had got dissolved!
So, next time some dude tries to fool our senior citizens and tries to entangle them in jargons or heavy terminologies, they know whom to contact–their rescuer—Google search engine!
Thanks to it now, that none of them feels like a fish out of water, and none of them feels lost in translation, nor in abbreviations!
