Babe Ruth, the great baseball legend was born on 6th Feb 1895, in Baltimore. He was the eldest of all the eight children and had only one history. His father did variety of jobs to support his family. Ruth lived in St. Mary’s Industrial School, which was an orphanage as well as reform school, where Ruth worked in the shirt factory and stayed their till he was 19 and until he signed a contract to play baseball.
Ruth had great impact on the American history. He is considered to be a huge style icon in American sport history. He had large number of endorsements and was the first to popularize the concept of athlete endorsements. Being a good pitcher earlier, he started gaining recognition as a hitter and is considered as one of the greatest baseball hitter.
He first led Boston Red Sox to two World Series victories and then was traded to York Yankees by Red Sox owner Harry Frazee. This decision is considered to be ‘worst business decision in the history’. New York Yankees had never appeared in games earlier and after Ruth’s entry won three consecutive wins. The biggest accomplishment for Baby Ruth was of signing the Yankees.
He was the first player ever to hit 60 home runs or more in a season. He is the first member of 500,600 and 700 home run clubs. Apart from this, few other awards included American League All Star Team, Baseball Hall of Fame, Major League Baseball All- Century Team and many more.
Baby Ruth was a very pleasant personality, always friendly to others, especially children. Baby Ruth truly represents the golden era in America’s Sport History and has been a style icon to all the American Youths, even today. The Yankees stadium is still referred as ‘The House That Ruth Built’. Even today Babe Ruth continues to have his presence in everyone’s life.
