Random

Random thoughts and random images

Of random events and random pages

Random decisions and random plans

For a random life of years that spans

Randomly is the way we are alive

Random efforts seemingly to survive

To really live a life, we need to learn,

that first we need to completely unlearn

All the randomness that has stuck to us

Of things that were taught to us

Some beliefs of which a cocoon we  spun

Recognize  it to be nothing less than a prison

Let the randomness be boundless and abound

To cross the horizons and swing us around

To let us see beyond the possible

Of things we thought were impossible

Sever the thin but strong threads of limits

And ascend the random, but new summits

Through this new randomness that will surround

With the new found clarity we will be astound

It will take us to places we never dared tread

And will find our own course instead

We will now be free and knowingly random

And the meaning of life we will now fathom

First Salary

I was amazed at the difference and similarity of how two people were planning to spend their first salary. One of them was my cousin and the second one was my maid. Let’s make it three since I couldn’t help but remember about my experience also.

gift First my cousin – She was excitedly telling me about what she was going to do with her first salary. She had made a long list. She was planning of buying stuff for herself, brother, father & mother. She was going home for diwali & she would take those gifts with her. She was planning to buy a very expensive saree for her mom, I could visualize my aunt feeling so happy when my cousin would gift her saree. I was sure when she would get to know about the price it would add to the joy. I don’t mean to say that my aunt is greedy but her happiness would increase on realizing that her most expensive saree has been gifted to her by her own daughter.

The chat with my cousin reminded me of how I had spent my first salary. It was so boring. My mother had clearly instructed me not to buy expensive gifts from my first salary since I had to save money for my dowry. I was so disappointed but I understood her practical point of view. Half-heartedly I had accompanied my friends for shopping. They were going all out buying the best gifts whereas I was purchasing token-gifts.

Coming to the third person in the story – my maid. She had just crossed eighteen and had decided that she will work as maid for getting that extra income. While handing her the salary I asked her how she was going to spend her first salary. She responded by saying that , what will I do didi. I will just hand-it over to my mother. She will know better what to do with it. I didn’t sense any sadness in her voice.

It striked me how three persons had spent their first salary so differently. Yet the underlying emotion for all of them was same – concern, love and respect for their mother & family.

Taking Care of your Books

33-booksBooks are your best friend. At times when you feel lonely, getting accompanied by a book can keep you occupied. Some people are so passionate about books that collecting books, novels and magazines is their hobby. For them here is an important piece of information as to how to take care of your books.

Keeping books away from humid conditions: Humidity in atmosphere often lead to spots on books, curled pages etc. Such adverse environmental conditions can damage books in the long term. You must therefore arrange for a cup board or furniture that is specially made for keeping books in the best condition. The book shelf and cup board must be humidity proof.

Ideal temperature for storing books: Books also get damaged in too harsh conditions like too much heat and so on. The ideal temperature for storing books is 68 degrees F. Let ample of sunlight enter the room. This can be the best way to keep your books in tip top condition.

Safety from pests: Pests and rodents can really be a serious threat for your books. If the room has the window which faces any filthy area then you must keep the windows closed and store the books in air condition.

Handle books properly: Many a times unknowingly and unintentionally we mishandle the books like tuning pages with wet hand, mishandling while doing photocopy, roughly moving the books etc. You must make sure that you keep books in the perfect condition.

Not Chinese, Not Nepalese…We are Indians

Hey fellow Indians,

We have a message for you. We would introduce ourselves before anything and everything else. We inhabit the seven states of north-eastern India and northern parts of West Bengal. As we have deduced from years of our own ordeal, many educated Indians even now aren’t aware or would show every sign of not to be aware map-north-eastof the existence of this part of India, often ignored or overlooked. Let us tell you, rather take the privilege to educate you on this. The seven states in the north-eastern part of India that also are referred as seven sisters are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland , Sikkim and Tripura. And parts of Bengal that we have referred earlier are Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Koch Bihar.

This June, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Mr. Pu Lalthanhawla finally vented his disillusion with his own countrymen at the Singapore International Water Week. And why wouldn’t he? In his own country he faced the question, thousand times at least if not any more, as to whether he is a Chinese or Nepalese or Japanese or a Korean? Shilpa Shetty being referred to as a ‘Paki’ in a reality show saw the entire Indian media on the point of shedding her tears and bringing her agonies, live and deferred, to every Indian household. The same media created a huge furor of the racial attacks against Indian students in Australia. But what about racism that we face in our own motherland? Where is the media? Lalthanhawla rightly said, “Indians consist of three races – Dravidians, Aryans and we in the northeast”. Is it just because of our short stature? Is it just because we have a flat nose and small eyes? We smell, with the flat nose. We see, with the small eyes as you do with your better features. God’s creation, we cannot help it. Neither do we want to.

Our girls have been customarily supposed to be easy preys in the bigger cities. It is tortuously burdensome for our girls to get houses/rooms on rent in Delhi and other cities, for people there think that we are harbinger of sex and drugs. Our girls are stamped born whores. Even if they manage to get one, there are unsympathetic restrictions on their choice of foods and what smells are allowed. Our girls are tired of the humiliation and unwanted advances everywhere. Tetei, one of our girls and yours too my friends, have been forced to leave Delhi because of the constant agonies she was subjected to. She was regularly pestered, heartlessly as ‘chinky’. We are reproducing below a poem written by Tetei

Tetei came from a village, far far away,
Where the spring river flows
and the nightingale sings.
Where the autumn brook glisters
like the face of an immaculate.
Where innocence still exists,
there amidst the hills so green.

She left that village, filled with dreams,

Dreams that she always dreamt of
back in her village so bare.
Dreams of neon lights and skyscrapers,
and of opportunity in abundance.
Dreams filled with dreams and dreams,
of changing her life and her destiny.

Oh how that dream shattered, with all the abuses,

Abused for being a woman,
as if it is a sin to be one.
Abused for being from the North-east,
as if she is a cheap whore from Sodom.
Abused by the media for being both,
as if they haven’t done enough harm already.

Tetei cried every night, and finally made her way,
Back to her barren village, far far away.

Urban Pind, a popular South Delhi club in June 2008 denied Dolma (a Naga lady) an entry, though they let her two friends in, a German and a South Indian. Asked about her nationality, she kept on trying to establish her identity as someone belonging to the North-East of India only to be replied back that she didn’t own the right identity for entrance. Any suggestions on how should we react to that? What about our fundamental rights? How should we feel? We have feelings too! Please remember.

Gyati Talo, a 32-year-old teacher from Arunachal Pradesh, who finished his graduation from a well-known college ofDelhi was being literally abused and agonized by a bunch of YOUNGsters in a Delhi lane because of his mongoloid features. He managed surviving three years in the capital city by not stepping out of his home alone after the sunset.

A study carried out by North East Support Centre & Helpline early this year revealed 86% of North Easterners being subjected to racial discrimination in Delhi. The scrutinizing looks and the questions, the feelings of being a proud Indian and being conscience-stricken of the need to assert identity are too harsh. India isn’t only Uttar Pradesh or Maharashtra. Neither is India only Chennai and Kolkata. India is as much Manipur and Nagaland. India isn’t only Anu Sharma and Anjali Daware. Neither is India only Narayana Subhramaniam and Saptarshi Chatterjee. India is as much Zorothra Darlong and Larson Sanathomba. Can we not any more be treated as aliens in our own soil? If only you co-operate.

Yours loving,

Fellow Indians

Say No to Carbonated Drinks

carb-drinksPeople have switched their loyalties from water to carbonated beverages. According to the available studies, people drinking more of carbonated beverages as compared to water, are high in number. But this is going to have dangerous effects on your health. You must know a few facts about carbonated drinks that will give you a better understanding of the risks involved.

Carbonated drinks have lots of preservatives, sodium content, fructose, caffeine and sugar additives. These ingredients are high in calories. Apart from the calorie concern, these ingredients have tendency to serve with a few dangerous side effects. These substances create toxic reactions in your body and you may have an ill health.

There are so many healthy beverages and drinks available. You have a wide range of choice. You can choose something that is much healthier and better than these carbonated drinks.

You must be thinking that carbon also has negative effects on your body. But mind well, other ingredients apart from carbon are more negative in character. Carbon is mild enough to merely erode your teeth enamel. But the real villians are the other ingredients present in sodas and carbonated drinks. That is the reason why you must have healthy beverages like fruit juices, butter milk, milk, shakes etc.

Missing the newness about Diwali

Yesterday afternoon when I returned from a time-pass shopping spree and was planning for the evening visit to a friend’s house I thought of dressing my toddler in the the new pants which I picked for him. But then I told myself Diwali is around the corner maybe I should put this on for him on Diwali. With this thought I drifted into the yester years of my childhood and teenage.

As far as I can look back and think of my childhood Diwali was supposed to be festival of everything new, colourful and happy. I can remember “Mumma when are you going to buy me a new set of party shoes”. Pat would come the reply “Remember around Diwali how the shops are filled with new goodies, lets buy a pair then.”

My father then used to own a shop which sold dress materials (yes ready to wear was not as much in vogue then!). All year we would go visit the shop umpteen number of times and each time I would spot something catchy and park it in my heart and tell mom that this was the fabric I would want my dress to me made of.
All year if I saw some nice design for a dress I would tell my mom that , that was my pick for my diwali dress.

When the time was ripe and shops were laden with new stock mom would take us all shopping for our diwali dresses. WOW the day was one of the most celebrated days in the year. Having chosen the fabric from our very own shop (a very tough decision) we would rush to the tailors to choose the latest design. Mummy would pick new bedsheets, new curtains, new table cloths etc.. The long exciting wait for the day when the tailor would have the dress ready would call for an immediate run to the shop again. The trial and any special fittings would follow. Once all that was done the matching shoes had to be bought. Aahh now am ready for diwali only until next morning the wish list would get longer with the type of crackers I wanted. I was never a bold person so would settle for those colorful fountains, sparkles etc. And ofcourse any other new stuff which had come to the market.

Diwali was the busiest season for my dad at the shop and this diwali one only reason I detested this festival time. Dad once consoled my little heart saying the way we love to go out and shop so does all the world outside and since our shop has such nice things he needs to keep it open on Sundays and be up late nights too. My heart did not accept this but i got used to it. My dad would compensate by getting silly small stuff for us on his way back and my heart would melt 🙂

The dress is ready, the shoes are ready and the crackers too..so I am ready too to welcome diwali with open arms…The house got a warmer and livelier look on this festival. On the day of the festival the earthen lamps with their flickering flames would create a warm sensation all within.

NO not this time..not been in the last few years…its not that as if I dont have new dresses or new shoes any more but the newness about Diwali is missing. New shoes, new dresses are now available round the year. The shops are laden with new stuff round the year, The sale is ON, the shopping sprees happen every now and then. The sweets and goodies are now at your disposal to savor every other day.

Diwali is not the diwali it used to be, any more. The newness is being missed the warmth is being missed. My childhood is being missed. The limited supply of things in life bringing in unlimited happiness is being missed. Oh my ma-papa I miss you so much.

Laughter would be bereaved if snobbery died.

interview-panel

Every one is born with certain arrogance and lives with it in spite of attempts to tone it down. The contribution of conceit in generating smiles is immense but rarely appreciated. If you see it from proper perspective, all the smiles are but manifestation of conceit. If you do not agree read on to know what happened with me on a single day, which will help you see my perspective.

I got up that day to see the sun smiling gloriously into a cheerful day. as I stupidly rubbed sleep out my eyes the doorbell rang, a smiling milkman mocked “abhi uthe kya”,  his tone meant lazy women I have been awake long enough to milk the cow and serve the milk at your door step and you lazy woman you would take ten more minutes to bring the vessel. Irritated I hurried.

Hurry means worry and I experienced it that day. As I hurried back with milk, I slipped on the wet floor. The thud generated panic and all the household was hovering over me with smiles on their faces. the milkman , the smiles, the delay every thing seemed annoying that day but daily responsibilities like god, are above everything , you have to follow them . I proceeded for the office, at the signal a child sitting comfortably on the mothers lap smiled at me as I waited anxiously for the signal to go green, I looked away. However, smiles generates curiosity so I looked back again, it smiled again. As if mocking at the futility of my anxiety while the light took its sweet time to turn green. Irritated at the way the day had begun I entered the office. The peon enquired

“Aaj bahut gusse main ho” while he sat smiling amid his misery, I continued over looking him as insignificant.

“I thought you were on leave today”, my colleague smilingly enlightened me. That reminded me of a job interview, for which I had taken leave.

“I had left something important in the drawer” I excused smartly concealing that I had forgotten that I was on leave.

As there was no time left, I chose to proceed for the interview with out the documents. The interview was in a hotel so I waited in the lobby after informing the receptionist. The plush air-conditioned lobby provided a cozy atmosphere. A man arrived and sat next to me. I looked at him and looked away as if it did not matter. Charming as he was, initiated a talk immediately.

“Are you here for the interview?”

“You too?” I cross-questioned. He nodded.

We discussed issues related to my job and other topics.

“I am impressed” he smiled.

“Makes no difference ,whoever impresses the devil inside gets the job , I   know you will get it because I don’t have my original papers today .and who will hire a stupid woman who forgets her interview date and time ” I replied .the  receptionist signaled and he walked off .I wished him luck and he smiled. In ten minutes, I was called for. The interviewer was the gentle man I met in the lobby.

“This devil gives you the job, congrats”, he said before I could say any thing. My application had my photograph and he had recognized me. He laughed at his own smartness leaving me to wonder was it his haughty ness or my stupidity.

Bilva at temples of Lord Siva

bilva
why is crataeva leaf used in temples  of    Lord Siva  ?

Crataeva tree is considered one of the favourites of Lord  Siva. Hence it is given a prominent place in Siva temples the prickles f this tree represent sakthi the mother goddess the branches represent the Vedas and the roots are taken  for Rudra, the lord Himself . Each represent three gunas (features) each. The devotees of Lord Siva take them to be the tree eyes of their deity. Most devotees consider crataeva as a holy tree  that can cure all sins of a lifetime.

As per the belief, one should not pluck the crataeva leaf on new moon and full moon days. All part s of the tree are excellent Ayurvedic  medicines. Foreign  Agricultural Universities foster crataeva in consideration of its medicinal value, reports the Science today magazine.

Rheumatism, phlem, vomiting, tuberculosis, diarrhea and such ailments an be cured using crateva. In  the treatment of diabetes also crataeva has unique role. The Ayurveda doctors point out that the oil boiled in the juice of leaf can cure ear pain, puss in the ear etc. The change in the nature on the full moon, new moon days can  affect the tree also. That is why there is restriction in plucking its leaves on these days

Selfless or Selfish

selfish2A very senior colleague of mine often addresses me as Mother Teressa of the department that I am part of. It is indeed overwhelming to be given that honor and I often wonder if I really deserve it. From my view I dont but from his I do so I have now stopped thinking of the deserving bit!

Also very often people have wondered and asked me how I manage to take out time for the social initiatives that i am part of in my organization – despite being  a working mother et all. I have not always managed to contour an answer which is complete and correct. Because in my heart I have always felt that it is as much my need that I am part of all such social initiatives as my urge to help the needy.

I dont know how I got into this foray but yes I have been active in this field as a volunteer ever since my college days. The momentum continued when I joined my job and thankfully till date.

Each time I have visited an orphanage I have felt blessed that I have a loving family that I belong to and a home that is mine. Each time I have spent a day at an old age home I have felt the urge to respect my parents even more since they take care of my grandparents so well and have felt an additional responsibility to take care of my parents when they grow old and needy.  Every time I work with someone who is physically handicapped I do not forget to thank God for my body and mind which is so beautiful and fit inside out! Every field trip to the slums to give away clothes when the winters are about to set remind me of my closet and the clothes I have been able to afford without having the need for them. A charity lunch organized to collect funds for education reminds me of the pocket money which my parents sent every semester without having the need to report to them my detailed expenses.

And above all any time spent at the orphanage, old age homes, rehab center etc is sure to spread smiles on the faces of many and win you blessings that you sure deserve then.

So now am I being selfless or selfish is the question I often have but whatever be it I am happy for being part of all this the way I am.  Thank You God!

ALL IN A DAYS WORK

friendship-day-celebrationIt was a month since the friendship day was over. So I was surprised to hear my nephew talking about something like celebrating the day in grand style. I asked him what were they celebrating? He gave me a exasperated look and started putting things in his ruck sack for going to college. He suddenly opened his cupboard and took out the straw like instrument used for blowing bubbles and put it in his bag.

“why are you taking it to college?” I asked him.
“Obviously for blowing bubbles. What else?” He answered me, shaking his head from side to side and expressing pity over my question.

“Don’t tell me you will blow bubbles in college. Your professors will throw you out of class, maybe, out of college.”
“Why would they do that on a Bubbles day! Aunty you are so funny.”

“Bubbles Day? What is that?”
“Oh. My God! Don’t tell me you don’t know. You really don’t know Bubbles day? This is height of your ignorance. You don’t even read the newspapers properly. Otherwise you wouldn’t have asked this question”

“O.K. O.K. Now you tell me what it is.”

“The Indian youths have designated all the 365 days in the year to some specific thing. You know Teachers day, Fathers day, Mothers day, Friendship day, Valentine day, O.K.? Bubbles day is one of them”

“And what do you do on a Bubbles Day?”
“Obviously blow soap bubbles. The boys blow bubbles at girls, girls blow bubbles at boys and we freak out. In the evening we take out our bikes, two on each bike. If it is your girlfriend sitting behind you then the fun is more. We ride the bikes at breakneck speed and the pillion rider blows bubbles“
“The Police? Don’t they prevent you from doing it?”

“No. An MOU has been signed between the Government of India and the Indian Youth Movement. The government has understood that we Indians are the first in the world to observe 365 days in a year for some specific purpose. Moreover, the Hotel Industry, Flowers Industry, Gift shops are all making roaring business. We are contributing towards making the economy sound and healthy. As a result laws have been changed to allow us to celebrate all these days. After all, Aunty we are keeping the country happy. Don’t you think so?”
“Yes. Indeed this is a happy state of affairs. By the way tell me when do you study?”

“What is the need for that? There are agencies who give guarantee that you will get good marks in the examination.

Nowadays, you just need to give contract for everything. There are agencies for everything that start operating from your birth and provides services right up to your last rites. Oh, God! Aunty I am getting late. Tata. Bye. Bye.”

“Just a second dear. Just tell me what are the other days that you celebrate throughout the year.”
“Aunty I will give you hand book on that. But, to tell in short, there is Balloons day, Crackers Day, Jeans Day, Earrings Day, Sneezing Day and many more. I will tell you about it all in the evening. I must rush now. My friends are waiting for me.”

My nephew rushed out of the house.
“Aunty, Aunty!” My niece was calling me. I came out of my reverie with a start and started thinking whether my conversation with my nephew was a dream. Well, I will have to wait till evening to know the truth.

Enabled Society for the disabled

Last Sunday while my husband and I waited outside Wal-Mart to be picked up by a friend we saw a car getting parked into the reserved area for the handicapped. We both kind of looked out of curiosity what handicap did that pretty and bold looking lady had. We saw her get down almost on one foot, and instantly pull out the wheel chair from the rear and wheel away. I wondered if anyone with such a handicap in India could be behind the wheels and live a life so independent.

Another day on the bus we saw  how the driver ensured the wheel chair is securely fastened before he could start the bus. And how the blind guy could just flash his card, walk with his white can and comfortably occupy the designated seat .

I believe not even in their wild dreams can such handicap be not really that much of a handicap in life in India.

While I have seen reserved parking areas back in India too of course, I have never seen them being utilized. I have seen ramps in a lot of buildings , accessible wash rooms but hardly any one with the wheel chair on the move. I have not researched on the statistics but am pretty sure there are enough challenged in India too but they are not equipped to be by themselves into the same society as ours.

In my stint with the work I do with blind schools, the under privilege etc back in India  I have met many physically and visually impaired and have always got the feeling that they are as smart (many a times even smarter) but yet deprived. It is extremely disheartening to know how these people are not still part of the main stream society.

Did you know you can also get into similar conversations with the “disabled” just like you do with the others  ..how was your weekend, hey you lost weight and which team are you cheering for during the IPL. I admit before I met a few people so closely, I used to wonder what kind of conversation can one get into with someone who cannot see. Trust me they have a view point too!

I have a friend/colleague who is visually challenged but ever enthusiastically charged I would say. Not one day have I spoken to him when he has complained of his handicap, if ever he was feeling low and speaking of the challenges he faced it was always because our society is not enabled. Every time I speak to him (that’s many a times on instant messenger) I wonder what it will take to have all such visually impaired friends live a life which is not dependent.

Well the list is endless if I start to talk about the changes that we need to bring about in our society but to start with I would think we need to open our minds to them. We need to tell ourselves yes they are challenged but it is us who are disabling them. Let’s create the mind-set to enable to society in at least one way for the disabled. I dream, I hope you too will share this dream – of an enabled society for the disabled.

Joys of Giving…

giving_receiving

Give in to the lovely ways of nature,

And you would understand the essence of selfless giving…

Look at the impressions given by a humble sand to your feet,

Feel the gentle care of the breeze, when it flows across your cheeks,

Soak in the cozy warmth of a loving winter sun,

Marvel at flowers that fragrant even after withering,

Thank the shivering stars that brave a dark cold night to pave your path,

Look at the desire of the waves to quench the urge of a thirsty beach,

They all give so selflessly and humbly,

Because the joys of giving are unbound my friend!

non violence vs violence

ACCIDENT, a condition of affairs, in which presence of mind is good, but absence of body better. I agreed with this droll definition of accident when the other day I read that the crowd set afire vehicles after a speeding truck killed a youth on Pardi Naka. It was yet another instance of displaced violence and so I dismissed it as one of the regular things which finds place in our newspapers. Having never had a feel of such incidence, we are fed up of reading such news. But when someone close to us becomes a victim of such incidence we understand why the scribes pay so much attention to such news.

riot-at-un-conferenceIt was Sunday and one of my friends asked me to read a particular article in a vernacular paper. The article was about my lecturer at the SFS College who got caught up in the riots that broke after the accident at Pardi Naka. The windows and other glass screens of her car were smashed. Even after the incident she continued her tour and returned to Nagpur after delivering the lecture for which she was going to Lakhni .I shuddered imagining the situation and what she might have gone through while the crowd attacked the car. The thought provoked a curiosity and concern and I visited her the following day and quizzed her about it.

She was her normal self cool and smiling and ready with a cup of coffee. I asked her whether she panicked when the crowd came with torches and the stones smashed the windows. She coolly said “I was more worried for the driver and the young couple that accompanied me”. Her focus was more on the lecture that she had to deliver and the fact that a young and beautiful girl was accompanying her. The young couple that was with her was under her care she felt the responsibility even when she was at the receiving end of the misplaced rancor. I felt proud that I was her student and told her so. I had read the review of her lecture at Lakhni and knew that she was as usual very good and entertaining. She further said just when she was entering the limit of Nagpur city she informed the family members about the incidence so that they should not get a jolt on seeing the badly injured car. When she reached home and every body saw what damages the car had suffered and all they did was to send the car for repairs immediately. As the damaged car would have sent panic waves.

A fitting response from the brave family. On reflecting on the above incident it can be confidently said the violence can be effectively tackled by keeping the head cool in adverse situation. It is generally said that educated people give lectures about peace because they are not at the receiving end of the violence. But if we see in detail the news regarding the responses of the sane in such cases we are pleasantly surprised that they generally face it boldly and continue as if nothing has happened.

Though such instances leave a deep scar on their mind but by setting a brave example they teach us the best way to deal with violence.

The “VOW” shades of India…

tajWhere on earth would you find a country whose every mile is dotted with striking contrasts? And yet, in these varied shades of diversity, there is an inherent sense of binding, which can only be felt by being on this great land; in true flesh and blood.

It is a land where the preacher of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi was born. This amazing land is also home to an eternal monument of love, a real masterpiece of art; The Tajmahal. This land has a rich architectural heritage spanning centuries; with historical monuments spread through its stretching miles.

It is indeed a blessed land, which has been gifted with ample flora & fauna, that provide a perfect dwelling for a variety of wild life. It is a land where many religions and faiths live in harmony. It is a country of many languages, many customs, many traditions and many colours;. and a perfect amalgamation of the old and the new.

It is a country where faith is stronger than all. This beautiful country has so many shades to offer to its visitors, that it is hard to remain unaffected by its simple yet spellbinding charm.

Come! Take a journey into this great landscape, and get VOWED…

Some age-old temples  aswell  accept s culptures of  Aristocrat  Shiva with 5 faces. Some paintings  aswell  characterize Shiva with 5 faces.

An important adoration (Stotra) committed to Panchanana Shiva is the Shiva Panchanana Stotram. It explains about the celebrity of the anniversary face of Aristocrat Shiva in the Panchamukha Shivalinga.

destiny

Destiny-Calligraphy-Poster-C12331207The imperceptible force that is beyond human understanding is popularly called destiny. We become aware of it when something good or bad or something specially shocking and unexpected happens.

When such a thing happens human mind seeks solace in god. The confidence in one’s ability is lost and the hapless mind seeks the unknown and that prompts the search for God, the omniscient. Even an eagle falls short of strength in the face of storm so also the most talented, the most efficient people face defeat in trying circumstances. It is here that the debate whether man is the architect of his own destiny or the destiny shapes a man begins. The hundreds of people who died in recent terror attacks were preys at the hands of cruel destiny. They were innocent people who lost their lives for no fault. Some were killed some escaped the death by a whisker. Some escaped unscathed but will carry the trauma for many days to come.

Many ministers have resigned but after that what have the home minister, the prime minister or the defense minister or even the lady above all ministers done to ensure our safety. When we see such incidents the puzzle about destiny deepens .we end up thinking human inefficiency is behind such episodes. And is it not cruel on part of destiny that the country with a second biggest population should not have one good statesman to see that the ten dastardly hooligans do not put us on tenterhooks for sixty odd hours. One accepts it as thing beyond our control when it is something like tsunami or the earth quake or even the draught. Yet the picture of Jesus Christ nailed to the cross makes us think why this great human being had to endure so much pain. Should we just accept it as human destiny? Despite all the pain and suffering one does his best to survive .

The teachings and the path shown by the great leaders gives us strength to endure the sufferings and we start believing in “nothing happens to anything which that thing is not made by nature to bear”. They say it is our duty to do our best to steer our life in the direction of happiness and prosperity. We cannot depend on destiny alone to take us to this goal. “Aspirations, love and hope are boats on endless streams, yet madly we chase these deceptive dreams.” Human mind is ever hopeful. And this quality of human mind helps man take up the several harsh blows that destiny has to offer. The girl who was hit in her head at the CST went ahead with her marriage with a part of the bullet embedded in her head. Such brave people show us how to take destiny by its horns when it goes wild. The announcer who kept his cool and dispensed his duty when the terrorists were showering bullets has changed the course of destiny for so many people.

So can we by doing our duty sincerely be the masters of our own destiny and also pave the road to happiness for others. Man is very frail compare to the other creation of god but the only thing that makes him powerful is his hope and expectation for that destiny smiles at him
